VR technology allows us to visit places we would have never reached otherwise, such as prehistoric times, deep underwater caverns, or the depths of space. While the graphics are not as impressive as they will be later on, VR headsets are still quite potent, especially if you pair them with a powerful graphics card and a decent CPU.
Deep Space VR is an educational video game in which you are taken on a trip around the solar system in order to examine various planets and get a better understanding of where everything is. Naturally, the experience is not very interactive, but it’s still quite enjoyable with a virtual reality headset, because you are much close to the action and it feels like are in an actual spaceship.
The non-interactive aspect is quite disappointing, on the other hand, since it would be nice to at least have some sort of basic tools at your disposal. It’s easy to get distracted this way, unless it’s your first time with VR and you are astonished by the view. Experienced users might get bored, however, because there are better space games with VR support out there.
Although you only get to observe Earth and Mercury from far away, the game takes you down on a more personal trip when you reach the Moon. In fact, you even get to see the flag planted by the Apollo 11 crew five centuries ago. Not only that, but the same thing is true for Mars, except of course you don’t get to see flags or any other man-made objects.
As far as the graphics are concerned, everything looks quite nice, although some textures are not as hi-res as they could be. The planets seem rather small, which kind of undermines the whole personal spacecraft idea. However, you probably won’t have time to worry about all this as long as you are enjoying the virtual reality illusion.
In the end, there’s a lot of work left to be done on Deep Space VR, but it’s definitely a great start. Hence, if you are curious about space and you already own a virtual reality device, this can be a great way to put it to the test.
