Lionshate is announcing that it has bought the rights to the The Kingkiller Chronicle series created by Patrick Rothfuss, and it seems that the company has plans for a cross medium strategy for the intellectual property, which involves a video game push.

The Hollywood Reporter also talks about movies and a possible television series based on the books, all of which are supposed to be offered to fans at the same time.

The author is quoted as saying, "Honestly, I’ve never been very interested in a straight-up movie deal. But Lionsgate was willing to work out something different, a multiplatform deal where they develop the films, TV series, and games simultaneously."

Lionsgate has not announced any concrete plans to support Kingkiller Chronicle with a video game yet, but it will be interesting to see how a cross medium strategy for such a franchise works.

The main character of the series is Kvothe, who is recounting his life to a Chronicler, explaining how he came to be a well-known magician and adventurer despite a tragic event from his youth.

The Name of the Wind was released in April 2007 and managed to gain a solid fan base, and the second book, called The Wise Man's Fear, arrived in March 2011.

A third installment, which is supposed to end the current arc in the franchise, might be delivered in 2016 and will be called The Doors of Stone.
