A momentous event took place in Japan during the past week as, for the first time in months, the PlayStation 4 has managed to boost its sales numbers enough to reach the top of the hardware chart, managing to deliver no less than 54,494 devices to customers, which is a huge improvement over the 18,539 of the previous tracked period.

According to Media Create numbers quoted by NeoGAF the 3DS handheld saw its own numbers drop from 48,919 to 34,756 for the week that ran until September 6.

The last position on the hardware podium belongs to the PlayStation Vita, which saw a slight decrease in its own sales.

The Nintendo made Wii U currently sit at 10,232 and is ahead of the PlayStation 3 at 2,817 and the Xbox One at 180.

The video game that made the PlayStation 4 such a hit with gamers was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which took the number one position in the software chart, managing to move 293,652 copies in its debut week.
