The Xbox 360 strategy of region locking will continue to be used

Microsoft has confirmed that the next-generation Xbox One console will be region locked, as the company needs to continue the strategy it already has with the Xbox 360.

Region locking is a practice employed by different types of entertainment, like movies or music, to prevent discs from being played in another region than the one they were purchased in.

This practice is still employed in the current generation of consoles by Microsoft and Nintendo with their Xbox 360 and Wii U, respectively.

Now, Microsoft has confirmed that the new Xbox One will also be region locked, as games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines, according to a representative who talked with DigitalTrends.

This is another blow in terms of popularity for the Xbox One, as fans haven't been so thrilled with the console after its reveal last week due to confusion regarding used games and other things.

What's more, considering the PS3 wasn't region locked, it's quite probably that Sony's PlayStation 4 will also abandon this strategy.
