Play older games on the new console from Microsoft

Microsoft has made a hugely surprising announcement at its E3 2015 press event, as the Xbox One will get Xbox 360 backwards compatibility this fall, for free.

The Xbox One launched in November of 2013, and just like its rival the PS4, it didn't allow for backwards compatibility with last-generation titles, due to hardware incompatibilities, according to Microsoft.

Now, however, it seems that the technical hurdle has been overcome, as Microsoft confirms that it's going to bring Xbox 360 backwards compatibility to the Xbox One this fall.

At first, around 100 titles will support it but Microsoft pledges to continue adding more and more games to the service. What's more, unlike Sony's PlayStation Now cloud streaming service that allows PS3 games to be played on the PS4 for a certain cost or subscription, the Xbox One backwards compatibility will be available for free. It's unclear if it requires an Xbox Live Gold membership, however.

Xbox One Preview members will be able to start playing old Xbox 360 titles on the newer console later today, as the feature is entering testing ahead of its debut later this year.

Mass Effect 1 was demonstrated by Microsoft and the promo image seen above shows quite a lot of other ones, from Perfect Dark Zero or Super Meat Boy to many, many more.
