DirectX 12 is right around the corner, set to introduce a number of undeniable advantages in the way video games are made, translating into potentially significant gains in performance on the Xbox One and Windows PC platforms.

However, it's still going to be a while until the API starts showing up in games properly, as games need to be built from the ground up, making use of it in order to benefit from the power it affords developers.

As such, the advantages will not be experienced too soon, but it seems that the head of Microsoft's Xbox division, Phil Spencer, is pretty optimistic when it comes to how soon we'll be able to spot DX12 in action.

Spencer was asked by a Twitter user when we should start seeing games take full advantage of DirectX 12, being built on the API instead of merely ported from DirectX 11, the current edition of the framework.

He replied that it was likely that we would end up seeing games benefit from DirectX 12 by the end of 2015 rather than 2016.

It is highly unlikely that games that are currently scheduled for launch have had the time to make full use of DX12's multithreading power, but we'll get to see more over the course of the coming months.
