The Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft is the bestselling piece of hardware sold on the United States market during March, moving 261,000 units and generating record sales.

Data from the NPD Group quoted by GamesIndustry.biz also shows that the hardware sector has seen an overall decline, although the tracking firm is no longer offering actual sales numbers for the consoles it is watching.

The Nintendo 3DS handheld is the only platform that has seen an increase in overall sales when compared to the same period in 2012.

Analysts are expecting to see a continued decline in the value of sales as more and more gamers begin saving up money in order to buy a next-generation console.

The PlayStation 4 will be launched before the end of the year and Microsoft is expected to reveal its own Xbox 720 on May 21.
