The development team at Blizzard is announcing that it managed to raise 1.9 million dollars (1.5 million Euro) for the fight to end the Ebola epidemic in Africa that the Red Cross is at the moment engaged in.

The sum was raised from sales of the Argi pet in World of Warcraft.

The announcement states, “We announced that for every Argi purchased by December 31, 2014, 100% of the adoption fee would be going to assist in aiding in the fight against this deadly disease - and the community embraced this cute little intergalactic nibbler, helping out a great cause in the process. Thanks again to everyone who helped make a difference.”

World of Warcraft has about 10 million monthly subscribers at the moment, and that means any initiative that Blizzard launches for the MMO has a solid built-in audience.

It’s unclear whether the studio has plans to donate more revenue derived from sales of its content to other causes or whether this was just a one-off linked to the major Ebola threat.

World of Warcraft remains the only MMO in the world of gaming that can keep gamers engaged despite using a subscription model, while most of its other rivals are fleeing to free-to-play.
