The Xbox One is trailing behind, with Mario Kart 8 revitalizing the Nintendo device

Some statistics from the state of the home console market in Germany have recently surfaced, showing once again – to no-one's surprise – that the PlayStation 4 is dominating the market and that the Xbox One is, this time probably surprising everyone, struggling to catch up to the Nintendo Wii U.

This is an unexpected turn of events, as Nintendo's console has not been exactly selling well since its release in late 2012. The company seems to be showing signs of good health lately, with the defining factor of its position as second on the German market being the fact that nearly two thirds of all sales occurred this year, since the launch of Mario Kart 8, which sold over 2.8 million copies in its first month.

The release of the popular racing title, mashing together characters from all of Nintendo's franchises (and getting Zelda and Animal Crossing characters in November and May, respectively) and a lot of zany action, seems to have revitalized the demand for the Wii U by as much as 400 percent in some markets, including Germany.

The report states that the PlayStation 4 is the global leader for the German market, with over 540k units of the device sold since its launch in the territory last November, followed by the Wii U's 350k units.

The Xbox One is not faring very well so far, with the demand for Sony's PS4 being registered as six times higher than the demand for Microsoft's next-gen system, which is surpassed even by the former console top dog, the Xbox 360.
