Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition was initially running in 900p on the Xbox One, but thanks to a day-one update from developer Blizzard Entertainment, it’s right up there with the PlayStation 4 edition, running in full HD at 1080p.

The talented guys at Digital Foundry have set out to compare how well the game runs on both next-gen platforms, and to see whether any disparity in the way Diablo 3 plays on the consoles can add to the ongoing Sony vs. Microsoft debate.

“With no rift in texture asset quality, shadow rendering, effects-work or its lighting model, it's clear Blizzard has no mandate to push either console out of the parity deadlock,” the team reveals.

“Rather, it appears to be a point of continued attention, with the Xbox One receiving a 1080p resolution bump to bring it neck-and neck with PS4 in the image quality stakes. Outside of randomised item placements across each stage, these two games are now practically identical,” the final verdict comes.

The full analysis from Digital Foundry goes into detail explaining the various issues that both versions face from a visual standpoint, but ultimately the two platforms seem quite evenly matched.
