Developer Gaijin Entertainment has announced that all PlayStation Plus members will receive a free plane in War Thunder, starting on July 2.

The free warplane that amateur pilots will be able to get their hands on is the Curtiss P-36A Hawk, the very plane that 2nd Lieutenant Philip Rasmussen used in the defense of Pearl Harbor during World War II, earning him a Silver Star.

There's a bit of a story behind Rasmussen's heroic actions, as he was one of the few American pilots able to get into the air that day, and his plane was said to have taken around 500 hits during the attack.

Fortunately, he survived and went on to lead a long and happy life, and retired from the air force at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, in 1965.

War Thunder is an online multiplayer combat game that's currently in beta on the PlayStation 4 and on PC, and aims to deliver a full World War II warfare simulation. For now, the game only has aircraft, and the Ground Forces add-on is currently in testing.

The game offers a realistic combat flight simulation, and players who want to give its open beta phase a try will be able to do so with a brand new warplane, starting July 2.
