The development team at Volition working on Saints Row 4 says that it experimented with a number of second screen gameplay ideas for the game but wound up abandoning them all because it lacked the time to finish their creation.

Jim Boone, a senior producer, tells GamesIndustry.biz that, “We had a map on the screen, and you could look at the map. Which is cool, don't get me wrong. But our thought was we really needed to do something more innovative than that.”

Both Sony and Microsoft say that they have big plans to add new functionality to the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 via SmartGlass devices and the PlayStation Vita handheld.

It’s unclear whether players are ready to use second screens for anything else other than checking maps or using inventory items.
