The Electronic Retailing Association in the United Kingdom has announced that by its estimates video games have managed to generate total sales that are bigger than those created by movies and television shows.

Video games are estimated to have sold 1.93 billion British Pounds (3.08 billion United States dollars or 2.30 billion Euros), which is more than any other sector in the entertainment industry.

The numbers from the Electronic Retailing Association include physical and digital sales and apps that are linked to smartphones.

Kim Bayley, who is the general director of the ERA, stated, “This is a dramatic time for the entertainment market. It is an historic development for the games sector to have overtaken video last year. Video has long been the biggest entertainment sector.”

Second place in sales was occupied by Blu-ray, DVDs and other video sales that accounted for 1.8 billion British Pounds (2.87 billion dollars or 2.15 billion Euro) with the music industry coming in third place.
