Square Enix has just released a showcase for the powerful and versatile Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn engine, turning the title into a fighting game.

The engine is pretty robust, and there's no better way to show that than reimagining the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game as an arcade brawler.

The video looks pretty convincing, and it could pass as an announcement trailer, showing some impressive gameplay sequences, were it not for the fact that Square Enix mentioned that it was just for show.

There are some familiar faces and costumes, and it's pretty exciting to see them all from this unusual angle. Unfortunately, the team does not currently have any plans to pursue this direction, but it would certainly be an interesting way to enjoy the world of Eorzea.

In any case, fans of the MMO still have something great to look forward to, in the form of the first massive content expansion, titled Heavensward. Gamers will be able to experience the conclusion of the main storyline, and use a new playable race and three new jobs.

The expansion is due out on June 23, headed to Windows PC, and the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 home consoles from Sony. Heavensward will also mark the title's release on Mac OS X.
