The Witcher series would have competed against Diablo

The Witcher saga is one of the biggest role-playing game franchises out there, but one of its initial developers confirms that the first gameplay prototype was actually an action RPG title that played similarly to dungeon crawlers like Diablo.

The Witcher series has been around for quite some time, with small Polish studio CD Projekt Red delighting millions of fans from all over the world with its pretty complex experiences, based on a popular novel series.

The initial game appeared in 2008 but the studio had been working on it for many years before then.

According to Project Lead Ryszard Chojnowski, the first gameplay experience that used The Witcher name was actually a dungeon crawler.

Apparently, the studio decided to use the engine of an old first-person shooter called Mortyr, and deliver an action role-playing game that used just the world of "The Witcher" book series. Protagonist Geralt of Rivia wasn't even considered for the lead role, and as you can see below, the mechanics were pretty different from what was actually delivered to fans in 2008.

The video is certainly interesting, as is the commentary from Chojnowski. Apparently, there are more trailers coming that talk about the development of The Witcher 1, so expect to hear more soon enough.
