Pac-Man has joined the roster of playable characters in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros., the brawling game for the Wii U and 3DS.

The announcement was made during an E3 developer roundtable, where Masahiro Sakurai, director and creator of the popular fighting game franchise, delivered the news about Pac-Man.

Nintendo revealed that Pac-Man was the 33rd playable character announced for the upcoming Super Smash Bros., and that although he would appear in his 3D version from Pac-Land, he would also transform into his original 2D self for some attacks.

The company also informed fans of the franchise that Pac-Man's powers would include throwing fruit and eating power pellets, as expected of the beloved mascot, and that his smash attack is an enormous Pac-Man.

In addition to this, Nintendo also teased Game and Watch at the developer roundtable, but has not confirmed yet whether or not he'll be a playable character.

The other major announcement concerned the delay of the Wii U version of the game, which is yet undated, but expected sometime during Q4 2014. The Nintendo 3DS edition will be released on September 13 in Japan, and on October 3 in North America.

Sakurai said that the Wii U version was delayed because of the huge amount of debugging entailed by the project, requiring the entire staff to focus on one platform at a time, as the two editions of the game were not simply ports, but built on two entirely distinct architectures.
