Developer Firefly Studios has announced that their massively multiplayer online strategy game Stronghold: Kingdoms has attracted more than 3 million players so far.

The studio's gamble to self-fund the ambitious multiplayer real-time strategy game seems to have paid off, as the studio reported that since the game's release two years ago it has registered over 3 million players, being constantly ranked among the most popular free-to-play games on Steam, as well as in the top 50 games overall, according to Valve's statistics.

Stronghold Kingdoms' popularity is a testament for Firefly Studios' achievements as an independent developer, allowing the game to keep growing, as it could last be seen in February, when the developer added a new Europe world, allowing more than 30k players to battle for supremacy and form and break alliances, vying for the control of 33 different countries.

Firefly Studios has shared that its worldwide audience hails from over 100 different countries, having a total of more than 200k monthly active users spread out across its 22 game worlds, with thousands of new players continually signing up to play Stronghold Kingdoms.

The game allows players to evolve from a lowly hamlet and to build a thriving empire, guarding over and managing actual villages, towns and cities in a highly competitive and complex real-time strategy environment.
