Star Wars: The Old Republic, the free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game from BioWare and EA, will celebrate the unofficial Star Wars Day, May 4, with a free droid for all players as well as a special Double XP weekend.

Star Wars is a global franchise and fans have come up with a special celebration day for the series, in the form of May 4, dubbed May the Fourth as a reference to May the Force.

The Old Republic, the free-to-play online experience from BioWare, is getting in on the action and has confirmed that in honor of May 4, it's going to offer all players who have an account or who register for one until May 5 a free MT-4T Astromech Droid Mini-Pet, which can join them in their adventures. Existing players will start getting their new companion as early as today, April 29, if they log into their accounts.

Besides the new droid, between Friday, May 2, at 11am PDT, and Monday, May 5, at 12am PDT, gamers will earn double the amount of XP as part of a weekend celebration, according to the official website.

Expect to see more May the Fourth Star Wars celebrations as we get closer to the iconic date.
