John Smedley, the president of Sony Online Entertainment, believes that one of the best sandbox MMOs of the moment is EVE Online, mainly because the development team at CCP has understood that it makes gamers more willing to remain engaged in the long term when they are involved with the actual running of the game.

He writes on his blog that, “Sure there is a lot of content for players to do, but anything that’s important in the game is done by the players. This is a shining example of how this kind of system can thrive.”

Recently, a battle in EVE Online grew so huge and led to the destruction of so many capital ships that CCP decided to create a real-world monument to honor all those involved.

Sony Online Entertainment is at the moment working on EverQuest Next and on its Landmark companion, which are set to use a sandbox model and launch in 2014.
