Video game publisher SEGA says that it might launch more free-to-play powered video games on the Nintendo 3DS platforms as long as it is pleased with the performance of Initial D: Perfect Drift Online, which will be out in Japan before the end of winter.

The game can be played entirely for free as long as gamers are ready to put in the time needed to complete the various challenges.

They can also choose to buy points with real-world currency in order to unlock content faster.

Toshihiro Nagoshi, who also leads the development of the Yakuza series, is quoted by Joystiq as saying that, “We don't intend to stop with this title, and after looking over its results, we'll think about what to do next.”

It seems that a team inside SEGA is already evaluating which kinds of experiences are best suited for the free-to-play model.

The company is also exploring the possibility of launching them on mobile games.
