The development team at Trion Worlds announces that its MMO Rift is set to go free-to-play starting with June 12 of this year, with a new Patron level added for those who are still willing to pay a monthly subscription.

All areas of the game, every dungeon and zone, will be open for exploration to all gamers and the Rift Store will be updated in order to offer a variety of extra content, ranging from mounts and boosts to cosmetic enhancements.

Bill Fisher, creative director on Rift, states, “We have been listening to feedback from our players and watching the continuously developing MMO community, and are now ready to launch RIFT as a premium free-to-play experience.”

He says his team is preparing for the transition and will expand the overall scope of the game to appeal to a wider audience.

On the day that Rift goes free-to-play, the team will also deliver update 2.3, Empyreal Assault.
