The team at the Pokemon Company says that it will announce a new project for the franchise, which is described as shocking for the fan community, on August 26 of this year via an official stream that will also feature special guests and is linked to the Famitsu Japanese gaming magazine.

The official page doesn’t share any other details on the announcement and on whether there are plans to talk about yet another spinoff or remake or if an entirely new product linked to the Pokemon universe is being planned.

Recent rumors have talked about a new game that will use classic card game mechanics and will be launched for the iPad and possibly other mobile devices.

The announcement was enough to boost shares of Nintendo, which has a minority stake in the Pokemon Company and works closely with it for any new project.

Analysts are probably thinking that the new mobile game will be used as a test bed in order to allow the company to then move other big franchises, like Mario and Zelda, to those platforms, which could significantly expand its audience.

At the moment, the official position is that Nintendo is only working to launch companion experiences for mobile devices.
