The team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation Network is announcing that it is launching an extensive maintenance period for the messaging system of the service.

The downtime will start on Tuesday, April 21, at 9 PM Pacific Standard Time and will end three hours later at 12:00 AM PST.

Users of PlayStation Network will be unable to send, receive, delete messages, change group message titles, and add new members to one group.

The official announcement adds, "The above restrictions will be across all PlayStation Systems (PS4, PS3 and PS Vita) and the PlayStation Mobile app. All other PSN services and online gameplay will be unaffected."

As always, Sony will offer updates about the state of PSN using social media, in the event when the maintenance needs to be extended.

The company is not saying what changes it is making to the service.

The user community has a chance to offer their own ideas for how PSN can be improved, and oftentimes they are taken into account and implemented further down the line.

The PlayStation Network has been very important for the PlayStation 4, as it has managed to take the lead in terms of sales for the current generation of hardware.
