The team working on the PlayStation Network at Sony announces that it is taking down the service for routine maintenance on Thursday, August 22, starting at noon Pacific Daylight Time.

The period during which the PSN will be down will end at 6:30 PM PDT on the same day and the team promises to offer more information if the maintenance needs to be extended.

Sony is not willing to say exactly what upgrades are being made to the PlayStation Network.

Paul Sullivan, a community manager at PlayStation Digital Platforms, states via the official blog that the store, Home and Account Management “will not be available during the maintenance period but you WILL be able to access online play and apps provided that you have signed in to the Network at some point between now and the time of the maintenance.”

The announcement suggests that some of the work done is linked to the launch of the PlayStation 4.
