The Entertainment Retailer's Association says that it expects the new PlayStation 4 to outsell the Xbox One in time for Christmas of this year, with the Sony device moving 1.8 million units, while the Microsoft platform delivers 1.3 million devices to gamers.

MCV quotes the organization as saying that it has polled about 2,000 gamers in order to evaluate their intentions for the next-gen launch period coming in November.

Kim Bayley, the director of the SRA, states, "The drama and excitement generated by PS4 and Xbox One look set to produce the sales boost retailers have been crying out for."

Video games are expected to generate more sales than movies and music during the coming holiday season, benefiting from the contribution of next-gen devices.

The Xbox One will be out in the UK on November 22 and the PlayStation 4 will be available one week later.
