The two devices could not stop an overall industry decline

The NPD Group announces that both the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 have sold well in the United States in January 2014, although the market tracking company is not willing to offer actual sales numbers for the two platforms.

The PS4 has managed to outsell its rival by almost two to one in stores and the performance of the two devices means that overall hardware sales in the US has increased by 17 percent when compared to the same period of 2013.

Despite the solid performance of next-gen consoles, the industry has seen an overall decline of about 1 percent, mainly because there’s little positive news coming out of the software segment.

The PlayStation 4 is reported to have sold more than 4.2 million units worldwide before the end of 2013 and is due to be launched in Japan on February 22.

The Xbox One should also reach a number of new markets later this year.
