The Xbox One isn't the only console to benefit from the cloud

Sony is offering solutions for PlayStation 4 video game developers to use cloud-based technologies in their titles, just like Microsoft's Xbox One.

Games on the Xbox One will not only be able to take advantage of the next-gen console's hardware power, but also of the "infinite power of the cloud," according to Microsoft, who highlighted some time ago that the cloud could expand the Xbox One's power several times.

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida says that such a thing is also possible on the PlayStation 4, as he told Polygon that developers can use the cloud to offload computations such as online matchmaking or linking, although there will be limitations based on bandwidth.

Seeing as how the PS4 doesn't need to be online all the time, Sony recommends developers to use cloud services for the multiplayer modes, when the console is guaranteed to be online.

"We don't believe every title needs that. But if your title needs [an] online connection to provide some online features: Go for it," he said, referring to cloud-based services.
