The announcement that the Xbox One can be used as a game development platform put Microsoft in the lead of the race to capture the attention of indie developers looking to create a next-generation title.

But it seems that Sony is reacting by giving away its PlayStation 4 development kits to all studios that express interest in the platform, even though one costs around 2,500 dollars or Euros.

An anonymous source tells Polygon that, "All the indies I know got them for free. Sony has been amazing about kits and development thus far." "They are handing them out like candy," another one says.

Since the PS4 was first announced, Sony has insisted on indie support and the company has already secured a timed exclusive for the Witness, the next game from Braid creator Jonathan Blow.

The new Sony console and the Xbox One are expected to arrive in November.
