Problems with hardware and a lack of GPU led to a delay

A number of sources from the game world are saying that the PlayStation 3 home console from Sony was initially set to be released at some point during 2005 and was eventually delayed by one year because of problems with the overall hardware design.

IGN quotes multiple anonymous individuals as saying that the problems were linked to the new Cell processor and the fact that the device initially lacked a physical GPU.

One of the sources states, “it was going to run everything with SPUs. The ICE team proved to Japan that it was just impossible. It would be ridiculous. Performance-wise, it would be a disaster. That’s why they finally added the GPU, closer to the end.”

The PlayStation 3 was launched in November of 2006 and managed to sell well for Sony.

The company is now preparing for the release of the PlayStation 4, which will be out on November 15 in North America and two weeks later in Europe.
