The development team at Sony in charge of the PlayStation 3 home console is delivering a new firmware update for the device, labeled 4.66, which is mandatory for all users and will be automatically applied once players connect their platform to the internet for the first time.

For the moment, the company has not offered any kind of detailed changelog about the new delivery, and it seems that it is mainly designed to make sure that the PS3 is more stable and to update some encryption keys which are required to play Blu-ray disks.

More information about the way a firmware update can be applied to the PlayStation 3 can be obtained from the official support site of Sony.

The company is at the moment focusing most of its energy and resources on the PlayStation 4, which has been breaking sales records and is ahead of the rival Xbox One from Microsoft.

The company has recently deployed a major 2.00 firmware for its new platform and was forced to update it soon after with two smaller packages in order to solve some issues.

For now, the official line from Sony is that it has a long-term plan to continue to support the PlayStation 3, which probably means that more firmware updates will be launched in 2015.
