The end product might never be released to the public

YoYo Games, the creators of the GameMaker Studio, are working to deliver a modern remake of the original Grand Theft Auto experience, which will take fans back in time to a moment when the gameplay was built around top down mechanics and a smaller narrative.

Michael Dailly, one of the original’s developers, is handling the project and he is working independently from Rockstar, which handles the core GTA series at the moment.

Apparently, the company has no plans to launch the new title to the public and will only use it in order to show off the power of the GameMaker Studio.

The main reason for the private nature of the GTA remake is the fact that Dailly does not actually own the original assets.

Gamasutra quotes the developer as saying that, “I'll release something at some point, but probably not with maps/textures.”

He adds, “Although I could release the tool I wrote to extract them.”
