Electronic Arts has announced that the decision to make the entire Origin game store deal only in digital copies of games will go into effect on April 4.

This, no doubt, comes as news to many people that didn't know that Origin also dealt in boxed copies of video games. Well, you can scratch one more retailer off the physical edition megalist in your head and enjoy the spare memory space by shelving in some other useless information. There is a chance of roughly one in 5 billion to be killed by space debris. You're welcome.

In the aptly named "A Fond Farewell to Discs" post on Origin's website, the retailer reported that only 1 out of every 100 of its users ever made use of its capacity to sell physical editions of EA games.

As such, the decision has been made, and starting April 4 the entire Origin game store will only be composed of digital downloads for PC and Mac.

That means that almost nothing will change for 99 percent of the website's users, but those 1 percent who still desire physical editions of the game will no longer be able to use Origin for that purpose.

The reasons for the move are obvious, as digital distribution is both fast and convenient, as well as enabling the retailer to offer the "best experience," which going all-digital will make possible.
