Nintendo has confirmed on its Japanese website that production of the Wii home console has ended, after more than 100 million units sold worldwide.

Nintendo released the Wii back in 2006 and its innovative motion controls, coupled with the lack of high-definition output, baffled a lot of hardcore games, who believed that the PS3 and Xbox 360 would dominate the small white device.

That didn't exactly happen, as the innovative controls of the Wii resulted in an instant popularity with casual gamers, and Nintendo dominated both Microsoft and Sony in terms of sales.

Now, after quite a few great years, Nintendo has confirmed on its website that the manufacturing of the Wii has officially ended.

The company has been preparing for this moment for some time and shifted all of its focus on the Wii U home console last year, when it released it around the world.

Unfortunately, the new console hasn't exactly lived up to expectations, although Nintendo is still confident in it.
