Video game hardware maker Nintendo says that it has plans to sell 18 million 3DS handhelds before the end of March 2014, a solid increase over the number reported for the previous one-year period, which stood at 13.95 million.

The company also says that it will sell a smaller number of devices on the Japanese market.

Gamasutra quotes an official statement from president Satoru Iwata, saying that “There are more and more media reports suggesting that things aren't going very well for the dedicated gaming hardware business. But that's not true, at least for the 3DS in Japan.”

The launch of the 3DS was a little rocky, but Nintendo moved quickly to slash its price and, since then, the handheld has performed well.

A similar reduction in price might also be implemented for the Wii U before the end of 2013, to kickstart sales.
