Video game creator and publisher Nintendo has confirmed that a little more than 2 million units of the Mario Kart 8 retail package for the Wii U have been sold during its first month on sale, although the company has not offered a detailed breakdown of the figure by territory.

The information was offered during the annual general meeting of the company, which was attended by sources quoted by Eurogamer.

The figure is impressive because it constitutes close to one third of the full install base of the Wii U, which currently stands around 6.2 million worldwide.

Genyo Takeda, the research boss at Nintendo, says that the home console has also seen a boost in its own numbers since the launch of Mario Kart 8, although he did not offer any clear figures.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata is sick and cannot attend any kind of public function at the moment, but he was reconfirmed in his position, which was widely expected to happen.

Mario Kart 8 was designed from the start as one of the most important 2014 launches for the Wii U and it will be a relief for the company to see that its core titles can still generate solid sales in the short term, even if the platform on which they arrive is not very popular.
