Natural Selection 2 might have never reached the level of fame reserved for Call of Duty or Battlefield, but the game does offer a very interesting asymmetric multiplayer experience with mechanics taken from both the first-person shooter and the strategy genres.

Now the team at Unknown Worlds announces that it is limiting the resources that it is devoting to its long-term development in order to focus on its next project, Subnautica.

Instead of abandoning Natural Selection 2, the team is basically giving a community-led team the chance to further enhance the title, with their official backing.

The official announcement on the forums explains that, “Now with Unknown World’s blessing, we as a community can forge patch 266. We can hopefully start to incorporate the best the community has to offer, such as bug fixes and popular features… with many more ideas for the future!”

There are 14 community members involved in the long-term development of Natural Selection 2 and they are promising that their decisions will only be made after consultation with the rest of the fans.

Patch 266 will be detailed in the coming days and the leaders of the new team, WasabiOne and Obraxis, are saying that they have a number of ideas of how the title can be tweaked to offer a better experience for its long-term players.
