Limited new releases and bad Wii U performance did not help the industry

The NPD Group says that overall video game sales for the month of January 2013 on the United States market have grown by 9 percent when compared to the same period of last year, but that’s only because an extra week was added to the tracking period this year.

In real terms, the industry has seen a decline of about 13%, which is reflected by lower than expected sales for hardware platforms and essentially flat sales data for video games.

Sales of video game consoles have seen an increase of 4 percent to reach 205 million dollars (153 million Euro).

Software sales total 393 million dollars (293 million Euro).

The only bright spot in the NPD Group report, as quoted by VG247, is the accessory category, which has seen an increase of 30% because many gamers have bought Skylander Giants toys and have renewed their subscription to Xbox Live.
