The NPD Group is releasing the results of a new Exploring Digital Gaming report that reveals that as many as 16 percent of the entire gaming audience in the United States has chosen to only play digital distribution video games.

The firm has surveyed 6,000 players over the age of 13 and has found that 36% of them have downloaded and played at least one digital title on the PC, home consoles or handhelds.

There is a 30 percent segment of the market that will continue to pick up physical copies of their favorite experiences in the long term.

VG247 quotes analyst Liam Callhan as saying that, “Most digital players, regardless of device, don’t plan their purchases. They purchase simply when they find something they like. But primary console players do have a greater tendency to purchase at or before the time of release relative to PC players.”

The NPD Group expects the digital-only segment to increase significantly as more Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are bought.
