State of Decay makers Undead Labs decided to shift their focus from a gritty survival experience where you run away from gross zombies to an adorable critter battling game where you constantly chase cute animals in order to teach them Pokemon-Fu.

The free-to-play role-playing game has been in the works for quite some time, and it’s headed to Steam Early Access next week, on May 27. It blends some of the finest things the world has to offer, in the form of cute animals, hoarding, and magic-infused violence.

The real-time tactical creature battler places you in the shoes of a Warden tasked with collecting Solari, creatures with elemental powers, and using them in battle against non-playable characters controlled by the AI.

Those who want to try the game out in Early Access will have to pay for the privilege of doing testing, but Undead Labs promised a sizable bag of goodies for both variants available.

In any case, having a Pokemon-like game on PC (one that exists outside of World of Warcraft) is definitely an interesting prospect, especially since it’s in the MMO space.

If you want to check out some gameplay and see some of the critters in the game you can give the trailer below a watch.
