ModDB has announced that Terraria is the indie game of the year for 2011 while Multi Theft Auto picked up the same award when it comes to mods, according to the votes of more than 170,000 fans.

The runner-ups are: Frozen Synapse, the tactics game with a distinct style, Trine 2, the charming adventure, and Bastion.

The Mod of the Year award goes to Multi Theft Auto while the runner ups are made up of: Third Age – Total War, my favorite mod of the year linked to Medieval 2: Total War, No More Room in Hell and Company of Heroes: Eastern Front.

Scott Reismanis, who is the founder of both ModDB and IndieDB, stated, “For the first time in a long time, it was hard to argue with the 2011 winners, with even the staunchest critics agreeing every game featured deserved its place.”

The rebound of the PC gaming market means that more solid mods and indies are expected to launch during 2012.
