The team initially wanted to use older art assets from EA

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition was originally set to be a simple High Definition port, but the team working on the project at Overhaul Games failed to get the art assets they needed to upgrade, so they chose to deliver a complete remake.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Trent Oster, the leader of the team, states, “We went through contract details, we spent a bunch of time, money, effort on lawyers getting the agreement part-way, got to a pretty happy place, got a dump of all the assets that BioWare had, and we looked through and we couldn’t find any of the art source.”

Starting from scratch gave the team more freedom to modify and upgrade game mechanics and add voices to the game.

Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition is available on the PC and on the iPad and we have a full review for the game here.
