Markus Persson, best known to the gaming community as Notch, announces that he and his development team have taken down the PC servers for their indie hit Minecraft in order to make sure that gamers are not affected by the newly revealed SSL security issue.

In a message on his official Twitter account, the game maker explains that he is not sure for how long the game will be down and that a lot depends on how quickly the team at Amazon fixes the problem on their own servers.

A number of other services, including Steam, are affected by the same issue, but they have not taken the radical step of bringing their services down to protect users yet.

Minecraft is at the moment offered on the PC, the Xbox 360, mobile devices and the PlayStation 3 and has managed to sell well on all platforms.

Versions are also being prepared for the next generation of home consoles from Sony and Microsoft and the PlayStation Vita handheld.

The game is currently getting regular updates from developer Mojang, all of them designed to add more content and expand the range of possibilities offered to players who are looking to explore and create.
