A new video game based on The Lord of the Rings is in active development at developer Monolith and publisher Warner Bros., with an official reveal probably coming at some point in 2014.

Kotaku reports that an artist from the studio mentioned a story board for a new Lord of the Rings title that was in development as recently as January of this year.

The company is also hiring personnel for a new project, which is described as a cross-generation open world game that will have high production values and will use a number of adventure game mechanics.

The Saul Zaentz Company, which currently holds the licensing rights for all Tolkien-created content, has registered the name Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, which can be used for a variety of video game projects.

It’s unclear whether Warner Bros. wants another game based on the universe of the books or whether the company is aiming for a more speculative title.
