A misconfiguration of the network was to blame for the offline period

The outage the Xbox Live online service experienced over the weekend wasn't caused by a hacker attack or anything like that, at least according to a Microsoft representative, who pinned the blame on a network misconfiguration.

Xbox 360 owners worldwide found that the Xbox Live online service was down for a pretty long time over the weekend, especially on Saturday.

Microsoft eventually fixed the issues and the service was operational once more but it didn't offer any reason for the offline period, prompting some gamers to speculate that a hacker attack damaged Xbox Live.

A Microsoft representative has confirmed to Videogamer that the outage was caused by a "networking misconfiguration during routine maintenance" and is "in no way related to false claims of hacking the service."

No other details have been given, but the offline period did annoy some Xbox 360 owners, especially after recent rumors that the Xbox 720 next-gen console will require a constant connection to the Xbox Live servers.
