Microsoft's Phil Spencer has confirmed that the company's internal teams have been playing around with the virtual reality technologies for quite a while, although he declined to say if it's a full-fledged headset or something different.

Sony impressed GDC 2014 attendants last week when it revealed Project Morpheus, its own prototype virtual reality headset that's set to debut in the future.

Meanwhile, Oculus has unveiled its Rift dev kit 2, which incorporates major improvements over the initial headset.

Now, Microsoft's Phil Spencer has apparently confirmed during GDC, via DualShockers, that his own company has also been working on the virtual reality front.

"I think the technology’s really interesting, and it’s definitely something we’ve been playing with for quite a while," he said, pointing towards the company's famous Research and Development section.

Spencer congratulated Sony on its Morpheus showing and he believes that VR is going to make some big waves in the gaming industry.

"Sony did a good job with Morpheus and showing it here, and talking to the developer community. Looking at things like Oculus, Morpheus–they haven’t sent me one yet–but when I think about VR and its uses in gaming I think there’s a real something there," he added.

As of yet, however, Microsoft isn't willing to confirm anything about its VR plans.
