Video game developer Media Molecule, best known for creating the Little Big Planet series of platforming games and user content delivery systems, has announced that it has spent 4.1 million British Pounds, the equivalent of 6.3 million dollars, on research and development during 2010, mainly to create new ideas that can spawn new franchises.

The company says that the business is at risk “largely as a result of the company's heavy reliance on the one LittleBigPlanet brand name” and adds, “it is vital for Media Molecule to focus a high proportion of its resources on R&D to allow it to maintain its world leading position as a developer of innovative games.”

The main research focuses for Media Molecule are game physics and dynamics, web based interfaces, 3D stereo optics for advanced simulations, data capture technology, rapid world creation using laser data bases, processing tech.

At the moment Media Molecule is working on a new project not related to Little Big Planet.
