The switch to Turian made the character more powerful

Ann Lemay, a writer at BioWare who created the storyline for the Omega downloadable content for Mass Effect 3, says that the first incarnation of new character Nyreen was an Asari gang leader.

She decided to change her character to be a Turian agent in order to create a better contrast with Aria, the Asari criminal mastermind who was using Omega as a base.

On an Electronic Arts blog, the writer states, “With a DLC focused on Aria and therefore likely to lean strongly toward a more Renegade storyline, it occurred to me that we could introduce a much stronger character with a definite Paragon bent as a foil to Aria if we made Nyreen a Turian instead.”

BioWare has ended DLC delivery for Mass Effect 3 and rumors are talking about a new game in the series that will use a character other than Commander Shepard.
