The massively multiplayer online third-person shooter in development by Red 5 Studios, Firefall, was scheduled to have an extended beta, but nobody imagined just how extended it would turn out to be.

However, the company is now ready to launch the game into the unforgiving world, with the magical date revealed to be July 29.

The game's action takes place 200 years into the future, when an asteroid enters the gravity well of the Moon, shattering into countless shards, causing a global calamity but also leading to the discovery of a new element that is able to generate massive amounts of power.

Just like in the beta, Firefall will be free to play, with various paid transactions available in-game for miscellaneous cosmetic and quality-of-life upgrades.

"We designed a game with an extremely passionate and talented team. But Firefall wasn't complete until we were able to incorporate the invaluable feedback from our enthusiastic community during the beta period. Firefall is as much their game as it is ours," says James Macauley, CEO of Red 5.

You can purchase Launch Packs through the Firefall website, including a wide assortment of perks, like a bonus multiplayer vehicle, the game's soundtrack in digital form, and a concept art book.

The open-world MMO shooter will be available on PC through Steam or its website, finally coming out at the end of the month after spending several years in development and testing.
