The multiplayer mode in Killzone: Mercenary, which sees two teams of four players go up against each other, was designed by developer Guerrilla Cambridge in order to deliver the best experience for players, not because of the PS Vita's limited hardware.

Killzone: Mercenary is one of the best looking PS Vita games out there and many owners of the portable console are currently spending time with the 4v4 multiplayer mode.

According to Guerrilla Cambridge, the mode strikes the perfect balance in terms of practicality and fun.

"The four versus four player count is a design decision, not a hardware limitation," the studio's Gareth Hughes told PocketGamer.

"The reasoning behind why we decided to support that number of players was both technical and practical. Technical in terms of being unwilling to compromise the visual fidelity of the game in order to support more players and therefore bigger maps, and practical in wanting to fill lobbies quickly."

Killzone: Mercenary is the most recent iteration in the shooter series, although a new Killzone: Shadow Fall title will debut for PS4 next month.
