The team at Infinity Ward says that it initially wanted to implement the core ideas of the upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts in the Modern Warfare universe but it quickly became clear that an entirely new universe was required.

Mark Rubin, an executive producer working on the game, tells MCV that, "due to a lot of the changes we wanted to make with this new world, it really dictated out that we needed to make something that wasn’t Modern Warfare."

The first ideas for Call of Duty: Ghosts appeared during a brainstorming session just after the launch of Modern Warfare 3.

Infinity Ward then iterated on the core concepts and created an apocalyptic setting that could support them.

Ghosts will be launched on November 5 on the PC and current-gen consoles and will also be offered on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
